Why Does God let innocent Children Die? Because he is Evil...

We received this question not long ago.

Question: Why is your god so evil? If he is all powerful, why does he do nothing to stop 5000 children under the age of five from dying every single day, just from dirty water alone? Because he is evil. He inflicts suffering upon innocents. Why would you ever worship a being this cruel? You can not live in reality and pretend that your god is a loving one. Wake up.

Answer: You seem like an amazingly compassionate person. I really appreciate your sentiment of love and what seems like a real desire to see the world made into a better place. I have a few ideas to share.

If God is EVIL because he does nothing about suffering, then mankind is EVIL if he does nothing about suffering. Most of mankind does nothing about suffering in the world, therefore mankind is EVIL.

I've traveled the world and I've seen first hand the suffering that is taking place. I've been on well drilling teams in India and Kenya where kids were drinking from vile green ponds. I've held orphans in China, and HIV babies in Thailand. I've done what I could, not because I'm fundamentally good, but because of my faith. Jesus, in the words of Scripture, calls me to do better still. It's not my effort or good will that brings me to this, but Christ and Christ alone. If it were up to me, I'd probably just sit and binge Netflix because that's way easier. When I'm obeying Jesus, is when I make the most of what I've been given. It's when I'm not obeying God that the world around me is a worse place. If we all obeyed God, the world would be a beautiful joyful expanse of love. It's difficult, but through the lens of bitterness is not the only way to see pain in the world. There is another way.

You claimed that God must be evil because he isn't doing anything about suffering. God IS doing something about suffering. Here are a few thoughts from scripture on this subject, but I can't guarantee that you'll like them.

1. Suffering is a temporary situation with an eternal solution. John 3:16, Rev 21:4
2. God is closer to those who endure suffering. Psalm 34:18
3. God expects US to alleviate the suffering in the world today. John 14:12, Luke 10:25-37,
4. Suffering is the consequence of a broken world, which Jesus promises to fix. Rev 21.

Unfortunately there are negative side effects of suffering.
5. Suffering hardens some people's hearts to God. Matthew 13.

I beg you, don't let it be number 5. You sound like a compassionate person. There's so much work to be done in the world before Jesus comes back. We need to work to alleviate suffering where possible.

Here is the most important thing. Jesus offers free eternal life for all those who believe in him. John 3:16. In the eternal Kingdom of God (eternal life) suffering will be done away with. Jesus is the only way that suffering will ever be finally killed.

Please don't harden your heart to God's free offer. Please consider reading through the Gospel of John and taking a serious look at what he's offering you.

  1. GOD is not evil and he did and continues to do something about it. You see GOD put us all here to love and take care of the earth and all that's in it, this includes those children and those we may dislike. The one thing GOD doesn't interfere in is choice, GOD gave us freedom to make our own decisions whether we will do what he sent us to do. Man makes the choice and the result is the consequences of that choice whether it be good or bad.

  2. "If God is EVIL because he does nothing about suffering, then mankind is EVIL if he does nothing about suffering. Most of mankind does nothing about suffering in the world, therefore mankind is EVIL."

    - Doesn't this statement just prove that God IS EVIL??? Most of mankind does nothing about suffering in the world, therefore mankind is EVIL. Soooo ... therefore if God does nothing about suffering in the world, then God is EVIL too!!!!!

    1. You're forgetting that both God and man ARE doing something about suffering, CONSTANTLY. When you pose a logic problem (if,then) the 'then' portion only holds true in cases where the 'if' portion it was based on is first true. Your statement "if God does nothing about suffering," is false. I have personally seen God use his servants to show up at the right place at the right time with the right resources to ease suffering countless times. It happens every day in the lives of holy-spirit-filled kingdom saints. (any believer who doesn't merely lie and claim the label of Christianity, but actually takes the teaching of Jesus seriously and, through prayer, gives God the necessary permission to guide their thoughts & actions. Because of free will, & because God is not a rapist, he is only able to use people who have given him express verbal permission to be used for God's purposes. These people who have submitted to God in obedience are like instruments that God is able to direct and send directly into suffering. That's the normal life for a true follower of Jesus... not the 80 percent who name-drop the label Christian without fulfilling the accompanying obligation to be an AMBASSADOR representing Jesus to a lost & hurting world.)

  3. With respect to the person who first answered this question, I take a totally different approach when I make logical sense of it. Perhaps I can answer your question with another question. Where did you get the idea that suffering shouldn't exist?
A hint at the answer: We aren't meant for this world, we are meant for another--heaven, a place without suffering. Doesn't our experience of life point to the idea that we humans long to live without suffering? And, yes, God can be good and all-powerful yet let suffering happen. This is because it all comes down to free will. God gave us free will because he doesn't want robots or pets, he wants His people to choose to love him. But along with this free choice, there is a general evil that enters this world. Luckily, we don't have to live here forever. We have a choice to believe in God's promises and live eternally with Him in a place without suffering. Let me know if you have any other questions.

  4. If God does not exist, them the only alternative is materialism. Proteins and chemicals don't care about suffering. Thus by making the moral claim that God is evil, you are appealing to an objective standard of goodness, which if this god you've made up in your mind is evil, then this god can't be real. The God who is, is the One whose Goodness you are appealing to. Without THIS God, you can't make sense of evil for evil is the absence of good
